The Course

This comprehensive one-day training course explores the issues associated with people's responses to traumatic or stressful events. It is aimed at directors, managers and support staff who want an insight into dealing with the effects of such an event on the people they are responsible for.

The course is designed to stimulate discussion and to evaluate lessons learned. Delegates will contribute to a lively debate in relation to material presented and also examine their own feelings and motivation.

After the course, delegates will have gained an understanding of :


  • The “anatomy of disasters” from the point of view of the impacts on people
  • The roles of the various professional bodies in dealing with trauma
  • The impacts on and needs of “victims” and their families
  • The care needs of staff in trauma
  • Why human factors are important
  • How to integrate the human aspects into crisis management

Lead facilitator

Rosie Murray

Rosie can truly be described as a leading expert in the field of trauma and the human aspects of disaster response. She became involved in emergency planning following her support of relatives after the Kegworth air crash in 1989.

In the aftermath of 9/11, Rosie was the Project Co-ordinator of a helpline set up by the Red Cross at the request of the UK Government and had a similar role following the Indonesian tsunami in January 2005.

In recent years Rosie has become more involved in awareness raising and training programmes in relation to the human aspects of disaster response. She is involved in training police Family Liaison Officers as well as staff in Local Authorities and commercial organisations.

She chairs the UK Emergency Planning Society's Human Aspects Group and has contributed to a number of the national working parties and reports. She also continues to respond to families and individuals and remains a ‘hands on’ practitioner.
